A Trip Down Memory Lane – Part 3-The Final Chapter

I felt like I was on Cloud 9….WK “was getting better!” Woo hoo! And then it all came crashing to an abrupt stop on 8/3/13. I noticed WK starting what appeared to look like spasms in his belly. He would be sitting and you could see his belly move almost like it was contracting. It was late in the evening on 8/3/13 when I noticed this. On 8/4/13, I took him to the movies and he was extremely wiggly in his seat, abnormally wiggly. It was almost like he was so uncomfortable that needed to keep moving around to perhaps […]

One step forward, two steps back

Well folks my intention was to post something cool and fun about WK today but unfortunately we are dealing with some pretty heavy medical stuff. WK’s PANDAS Syndrome which has been in full flare now for going on 2 months. This means facial tics are out of control, rashes, etc. UGH! I cannot stand his Immunologist who gives us zero time and has his Assistant call me back when I have questions. I asked him months ago to run a blood panel on WK to see if WK had Strep or Lyme and he refused to do so because he […]

IEP meeting approaching next week…not a good time to stop drinking

IEP. Three little letters that drive me bat shit crazy. For those of you are unfamiliar with what an IEP is, it is an Individualized Education Program that is mandated by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. Here is a brief snip it from Wikipedia. If you want more detailed info then please click the highlighted “wikipedia” word. “An IEP defines the individualized objectives of a child who has been found with a disability, as defined by federal regulations. The IEP is intended to help children reach educational goals more easily than they otherwise would.[1] In all cases the IEP […]

WK’s Daily Schedule and it’s enough to make your head explode!

So want to know what consists in “A Day In The Life Of A Warrior?” Yes let me start by saying I know that every Parent leads a busy life. Trying to juggle work, kids, sports, etc. I get it so I am not trying to gain any sympathy here, but I think it is important to share what goes into making WK function at the level he currently is functioning at. WK is a “schedule” kind of guy. In order for him to stay on task he needs a strict schedule and as you will see below, it is […]

Music to my ears, well actually Drums!

One day I was working out at my old gym while chatting with this ever so friendly guy named Tyler.  He was telling me that he was opening a kids rock school and how I should bring my son.  I explained that WK had Autism but absolutely LOVED music and could memorize lyrics after hearing the song just once or twice.  Tyler convinced me to give it a try and so we did.  What has transpired after that is nothing short of amazing! The first year WK went to Rock School he was focusing on singing.  He was the real show […]

Warrior Kid™ Goes To Summer Camp!

Ahhh Summertime….don’t get me wrong, I really do love Summer, but holy shit WK’s schedule changes are enough to drive anyone bat shit crazy. Most kids on the Spectrum who have an IEP in place usually are offered Summer school for 4 weeks. A few years ago I decided that WK deserved an entire Summer with no school and that I would send him to the YMCA at his former public school with a 1:1 shadow. Our YMCA offers an inclusion program that provides an Independent Facilitator (IF) to attend summer camp with your kid. In all honesty it is […]

Warrior Kid™ Surfs thanks to Surfers Healing!

So a few years ago (about 5 to be exact) Warrior Kid had a playdate scheduled which for anyone that has a kid on the spectrum knows playdates are few and far between. I got a text from the friends’ Mom the day before asking if we would be down to head to Malibu and attend a Surfers Healing event. Honestly I had no clue what Surfers Healing was about as my kid for the most part hated the ocean. He hates sand thanks to his sensory issues and is clueless on how dangerous the waves can be should you […]
